Welcome to Sri Vidya Temple Society "Learn to Read Sanskrit" student web pages. The Learn to Read Sankrit course is for beginners who are interested to start their journey into Sanskrit. The main focus of the course is to make the student familiar in reading sanskrit.

Sanskrit is the language of Vedas. A meaningful study of Vedas will not be complete without the knowledge its script - Devanagari. Although Vedas can be learnt using English diacritics, it will be almost impossible to master the correct pronunciation. It is our firm belief that Sanskrit can be learnt by anyone.  In order to enjoy the nectar of Vedas, it is essential that we learn to read Sanskrit. We encourage all to learn Devanagari script and read Sanskrit in its native script. If few refer to read Sankrit entirely using diacritics and that's fine too. We strive to help you read Sanskrit in any of the methods you choose.

We have started this endeavour in a hope that you will learn to read Sanskrit.  We pray that the Guru’s Grace and Devi’s blessings be always with you.  Have a happy reading!

Audience: Any one interested in learning Sanskrit

Frequency: Twice in a month – please check the Temple calendar for dates

Course Duration: 12 months to 18 months

Pronunciation track: This track focusses on pronunciation of Sanskrit syllables. It consists of reciting Sanskrit Aksharas (alphabets) and one or two slokas. The pronunciation of Aksharas (alphabet) and words is expected to improve as the class progresses.

Reading Track: This track will be based on the study guide provided and focusses increasing comfort level in reading Sanskrit either using Davanagari script or Roman diatrics.

Tentative Schedule:
Classes 1 through 4: Introduction and Sanskrit Writing System
Classes 5 through 10: Reading Sanskrit
Classes 11 through 14: Simple words and phrases
Classes 15 through 18: Slokas (small)
Classes 19 through 22: Shankti Mantras
Classes 23 through 26: Suktam

What if you miss a class:

 We would want every one to attend all the classes, but missing one or two classes will not matter. In every class we will summarize and review the previous class material. Also, we encourage students to study the guide in advance and practice materials presented.

Also, for students who would like more help or unable to catch up due to missed classes, we may be able to arrange one-on-one session.
